Calcium chloride, also known as a clear brine fluid or "heavy water" is used in a number of oilfield applications. Well completion, workover operations and drilling applications can include the use of calcium chloride as a kill fluid in producing wells and as a means of providing wellbore stability while drilling water sensitive shale zones. Emulsified calcium chloride is also used in oil-based and synthetic drilling muds. Density of calcium chloride in oilfield applications can range from 8.33 to 11.6 lb/gallon. While calcium chloride can be used in a single salt phase, it can also be blended with sodium chloride, calcium bromide and zinc bromide as well conditions warrant.
