Because it lowers the freezing point of water, calcium chloride is used extensively as a deicing agent on roads and paved surfaces. Calcium chloride is relatively harmless to plants and soil and is more effective at lower temperatures than sodium chloride. Typically applied in prill form, calcium chloride releases heat when it goes into solution making it the most effective of all common deicing products.
